Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 10 | Pitch size: 40x36
This unopposed finishing drill is set up like two 18-yard boxes facing each other, creating two small-sided game areas on either side of a central line. Two neutral players are stationed in the middle zone to facilitate the combination play.
One player from a team starts by initiating a double 1-2 pass sequence with both neutral players before driving forward and finishing into the goal. After their shot, a player from the opposite team mirrors the action in the other direction. Teams alternate turns, focusing on sharp combinations and clean finishes.
• Speed of Combination Play: Encourage fast, sharp 1-2s to replicate real match tempo and keep the movement fluid and purposeful.
• Timing of Final Run: Focus on perfectly timed runs into space after the second 1-2 to create an ideal angle for finishing under no pressure.
• Body Shape When Receiving: Players should receive the ball with an open stance to play quickly and keep their options visible at all times.
• Controlled Finishing Technique: Reinforce calm, composed finishing inside the box, ensuring accuracy and correct body mechanics when striking.
Add Time Pressure:
Introduce a time limit (e.g., 5 seconds) from the start of the combination to the finish to replicate pressure and urgency in front of goal.
Focus: Encourages quick decision-making, sharper movements, and more decisive finishing in limited time.
Introduce Passive Defender:
Add a passive defender to apply light pressure during the second 1-2 or just before the shot, forcing players to adjust their body position and timing.
Focus: Develops awareness under pressure, timing, and technical execution in more realistic situations.
