Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 12 | Pitch size: 1/2 Pitch

  • Play starts with a 5v4 possession format in the first zone. The attacking team must attempt to progress play beyond the engagement line by playing around or through the defensive 4 players. If they successfully progress the ball into the attacking zone, they will attempt to finish the attack in a 3v2 format. If the defending team wins possession in either of the 2 zones, they must immediately look to progress the ball forward into any of the 3 mini goals located on the halfway line. This drill encourages attacking progression, quick transitions, and finishing under pressure.

  • • Possession and Progression – The attacking team should focus on maintaining possession and using quick, creative combinations to break through the defensive 4 players. They should aim to create space and angles to progress the ball into the attacking zone while keeping the tempo high.

    • Decision-Making in the Final Third – Once the ball is in the attacking zone, the attacking team should focus on quick decision-making in the 3v2 scenario. They must assess whether to play the ball to the open player or take on the defender, all while working to finish the attack quickly.

    • Defensive Shape and Pressing – The defending team in the first zone should focus on staying compact and communicating to prevent the attacking team from progressing too easily. In the second zone, defenders must quickly assess the 3v2 situation and look to close down the attacking options while maintaining a strong defensive shape.

    • Quick Transitions – When the defending team wins possession, they must immediately switch to attack and focus on progressing the ball quickly into the mini goals. This fast transition helps replicate real-game counter-attacking situations, requiring quick thinking and decision-making.

  • Add a Time Limit
Introduce a time limit for the attacking team to progress the ball into the attacking zone. This forces quicker ball movement and decision-making under pressure.
Focus: Increases tempo and urgency, encouraging faster progression and decision-making.

  • Limit the Number of Touches
Limit the number of touches for players in the attacking team, forcing quicker passes and decisions. For example, only 2 touches per player.
Focus: Encourages fast ball movement, improving passing speed and limiting defensive time to recover.
