Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 11 | Pitch size: 1/3 Pitch
This practice begins with the goalkeeper serving a ball into two attackers, initiating a 2v1 attacking phase. The attackers aim to combine quickly, commit the defender and finish on goal with quality. The defender’s task is to delay, force predictable actions and attempt to prevent the shot.
Once the 2v1 phase is complete—whether through a goal, save or turnover—the two attackers must immediately transition into defenders. At the same time, three additional players join the original defender to form a team of four. This creates a 4v2 attacking phase in the opposite direction, with the new attacking team aiming to score into the main goal. The transition demands rapid recovery, organisation and decision-making under pressure while giving attackers repeated opportunities to attack at speed.
• 2v1 Exploitation: Encourage attackers to commit the defender, recognise the moment to release the ball and finish early once the advantage is created.
• Transition to Defend: Coach the two attackers to switch mindset instantly—recover with urgency, take up defensive positions and protect central space.
• Delay and Engage: Reinforce the importance of delaying actions in the 4v2 phase, buying time and forcing the attackers into wider or slower decisions.
• Attacking Tempo: Highlight sharp, purposeful play in both phases, with quick combinations and controlled finishes.
Add a Time Limit for the 2v1 Attack:
Give the attackers 4–5 seconds to create their shooting opportunity in the opening phase. This increases intensity and forces sharper decision-making.
Focus: Improves attacking urgency and clarity in overload moments.
Allow Recovering Defenders to Win Extra Points:
Award bonus points if the two recovering defenders prevent a goal in the 4v2 phase. This motivates high-energy recovery runs and encourages better defensive organisation under pressure.
Focus: Enhances recovery habits, defensive resilience and transitional awareness.
