Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 9 | Pitch size: 20x20
This practice is played across two small possession grids with three teams of three players. Two teams operate as possession groups, one in each grid, while the third team acts as the defending/pressing group. Play begins with both possession teams circulating the ball freely.
One defender must sprint into either grid and attempt to win possession. As soon as they win the ball or force it out of play, they must exit the grid and physically tag a teammate. The tagged player must then sprint into the opposite grid and repeat the process. This continues continuously for a set work period before rotating roles between teams. The practice promotes repeated high-intensity actions, quick reactions and constant awareness.
• Sharp Possession Play: Encourage the possession teams to play quickly with one- and two-touch combinations to avoid pressure and maintain control.
• Scanning and Awareness: Coach players to check both grids frequently, recognising where the defender is coming from and adjusting their support positions.
• Defensive Intensity: Reinforce that pressers must enter the grid at full speed, win possession decisively and transition quickly to tag the next defender.
• Transitions Between Grids: Highlight the importance of sprinting out of the grid immediately after regaining or forcing possession, maintaining tempo and realism.
Limit Touches for Possession Teams:
Apply a two-touch limit for players in both grids. This increases the speed of circulation and forces players to adopt sharper angles and quicker support movements.
Focus: Improves quick combinations, ball circulation and off-ball timing.
Add Directional Targets for Defenders:
When a defender wins the ball, they must play into a designated mini target or bounce pass to a coach before sprinting out to tag a teammate. This adds purpose to the press and rewards clean regains.
Focus: Encourages controlled defensive actions and purposeful transitions after winning possession.
