Sao Paulo 1v1 Transitions
ADDED TO FAVOURITES

Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 8 | Pitch size: 40x36
This 1v1 transitions practice is designed to develop attacking and defensive behaviours in rapid succession. Two goalkeepers are positioned in opposite goals on a small-sided pitch, which is divided vertically into two equal channels.
Play begins with a 1v1 attack in the right-hand channel, where the attacker attempts to beat their opponent and score. Immediately after the phase ends, the same player must transition quickly across into the left-hand channel to defend a new 1v1 against an opponent attacking in the opposite direction. The practice creates continuous moments of attacking followed by defending, encouraging high intensity, focus and quick role adaptation.
• Attacking Intent: Encourage positive, direct play in the first 1v1-commit the defender, attack space aggressively and finish with confidence and control.
• Transition Speed: Reinforce immediate reaction after the first phase, sprinting across quickly to recover and defend without any hesitation.
• Defensive Body Shape: Coach defenders to delay, stay balanced, angle the attacker away from goal and avoid diving in.
• Physical Intensity: Emphasise repeat sprint efforts, mental focus and maintaining high concentration across multiple consecutive transitions.
Time Limit to Score:
Set a 5-second window for each attacking phase to increase urgency, tempo and decision-making under pressure.
Focus: Improves speed of execution, attacking efficiency and realistic game intensity.
Add a Recovery Defender:
Introduce a second recovering defender who can join after a short delay, creating a 2v1 defensive scenario.
Focus: Enhances realism, defensive coordination and challenges attackers to make quicker, sharper decisions.
