Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 12 | Pitch size: Half Pitch

  • This unopposed finishing practice starts with an up-back-and-through combination before a cross into the box for a 2-player finish. To add an element of chaos to the practice, 2 groups will play at the same time, attacking different ends of the field. This addition requires players to be more aware of the positioning of others in the area before making passes and runs, turning the practice into a semi-opposed-like scenario.

  • • Combination Play – Encourage quick, fluid combination play (up-back-and-through) before the cross. Players should focus on timing their movements and passing to break through defensive lines effectively, allowing the cross to come in at the right moment.

    • Awareness of Surroundings – As two groups are attacking at the same time, players must keep a constant awareness of their positioning relative to others in the area. Encourage communication between players to avoid collisions and confusion during the practice.

    • Movement into the Box – Players should time their runs into the box to meet the cross at the right moment, ensuring they are ready to finish. Attackers must focus on getting into space and making their movements unpredictable to beat defenders.

    • Finishing Accuracy – When the cross comes in, attackers should concentrate on accuracy and composure to finish effectively. Emphasize getting low and striking with precision, focusing on the far post or placing the ball in the corners.

  • Introduce Defenders

Add a single defender to each group to increase the level of pressure on the attackers. This will simulate game situations where defenders are present during crosses and finishes.

Focus: Improving finishing under pressure and defending awareness when attacking.

  • Limit Passes

Limit the attackers to only 2 passes (up-back-through) before the cross to encourage quicker decision-making and faster attacks into the box.

Focus: Improving speed of play and reducing hesitation in decision-making and finishing.
