Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 10 | Pitch size: 30x20

  • In this build-up practice, 2 players will cross over and defend in a 5v2 phase. The team in possession must attempt to make ‘X’ number of passes before scoring into the mini goals for a point. One team will build up into the wide areas, while the other team will build up into central areas. Teams will switch sides periodically. After each goal is scored or possession is won, players will transition to the opposite side of the grid to start the next phase of 5v2.

  • • Transition Quickly Between Roles
Encourage players to transition quickly between attacking and defending roles. Once possession is won, defenders must instantly switch to attacking positions, and vice versa. Quick transitions will keep the tempo high and make the practice more game-realistic.

    • Focus on Width and Centrality
When building up, one team should focus on creating width to spread the defense, while the other focuses on central combinations. Players must recognize when to use the wide areas and when to play through the center, depending on where the most space is available.

    • Passing Accuracy and Tempo
In the build-up phase, emphasize passing accuracy and tempo. Players should aim to complete the required passes with speed but also with precision. Encourage quick one-touches and sharp movement off the ball to maintain fluidity in the attack.

    • Defensive Pressure and Compactness
For the defending team, maintaining defensive compactness is key. Defenders should work together to close down passing lanes and limit space in the areas where the opposition wants to build up. The 5v2 phase requires defenders to be proactive in intercepting passes or forcing the attacking team into less dangerous areas.

  • Add a Third Defender
Introduce a third defender to increase the difficulty for the attacking team. The defenders will need to work harder to stay compact and stop the buildup.
Focus: This progression helps improve the defenders' ability to work together and manage overload situations.

  • Limit Touches for Attackers
Limit the attackers to a certain number of touches to increase the speed of play and force them to make quicker decisions.
Focus: This progression helps develop quicker thinking and faster ball circulation under pressure.
