Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 20 | Pitch size: 60x30

  • This practice works on a team's ability to retain possession under pressure. Play begins with a pass into either grid, and the defending team sends 3 players to press the 6 players in possession. If the 6 players can complete 10 successful passes, they can score into the main goal. The drill lasts for 4 minutes, and at the end of each 4-minute cycle, the team that conceded the least number of goals while defending and pressing is considered the winner.

  • • Pass and Move with Purpose
Encourage the 6 players in possession to focus on quick, purposeful passes and effective off-the-ball movement. This keeps the defenders on the move, making it difficult for them to maintain pressure and win the ball. Always ensure players are creating passing options for the ball carrier.

    • Pressing Triggers for Defenders
The 3 defenders should work as a unit, pressing based on specific triggers, such as the ball being passed into a player’s feet or when a player takes too many touches. Emphasize the importance of timing and communication when initiating the press to limit the options of the player in possession.

    • Compactness and Support in Possession
The 6 players in possession need to stay compact and close together. Encourage them to pass and move quickly, and support the ball carrier at all times. The spacing should be optimal to avoid unnecessary turnovers. Focus on players offering themselves for a quick one-touch or two-touch pass to advance the play.

    • Defender Recovery and Transition
When the 3 defenders lose possession, they need to transition quickly to counter-press. They should immediately try to win the ball back or force the opposition into a poor decision. Teach defenders to focus on their positioning and not overcommit when pressing to avoid being caught out of shape.

  • Increase Passes Required
Increase the number of passes required for the 6 players to score (e.g., from 10 to 12 or 15) to add more pressure and challenge the attacking players to retain possession for longer. This progression will test their ability to hold onto the ball while dealing with more intense pressing.
Focus: This progression focuses on improving the attacking team's composure and precision under pressure.

  • Add a Fourth Defender
Add a fourth defender to create a more difficult situation for the attacking players, forcing them to make quicker decisions under increased pressure. The extra defender can provide more angles and make it harder for the 6 players to complete the required passes.
Focus: This progression increases the intensity for the team in possession, sharpening their decision-making and ball control.
