Instructions/Setup:
This rondo drill is designed to develop a team's ability to switch play quickly and effectively through central areas. The setup includes three zones: two end zones with a 4v2 overload and a central zone with a 2v2 battle.
Play begins with a 4v2 in one of the end zones, where the attacking team aims to maintain possession. The goal is to eventually progress the ball through the 2v2 central zone and transfer it cleanly into the opposite 4v2 zone, encouraging quick switching and intelligent positioning.
Coaching Notes:
• Speed of Ball Movement: Emphasize sharp, accurate passing to quickly shift defenders and open up passing lanes for the switch to be played.
• Body Shape to Receive: Players should open up their body before receiving to allow quick, forward-facing play into the central area with limited touches.
• Central Awareness and Timing: The central players must time their movement and positioning to receive under pressure and play forward effectively and early.
• Communication and Cues: Constant verbal and visual communication is vital to prepare central players and trigger support options during the switch.
Progression 1: Limit Central Touches:
Restrict central players to a maximum of two touches when receiving the ball before playing forward or switching zones.
Focus: Encourages scanning, quick decision-making, and precise execution under time pressure and spatial constraints.
Progression 2: Increase Central Pressure:
Add a third defender in the central zone to increase pressure and make progression more difficult for the attacking side.
Focus: Develops composure under pressure, sharper off-the-ball movement, and accurate passing in crowded central areas.
