Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 7 | Pitch size: 1/3 Pitch

  • This finishing practice focuses on developing the ability to play fluid third-man combinations in central areas. The drill begins with a forward pass from one player to another. The original passer then makes a forward run into the space, receiving a third-man pass (a pass from a player other than the initial recipient). The player who receives the third-man pass then finishes the attack unopposed.

  • • Third-Man Runs – Encourage players to recognize when to make the third-man run into space. The timing of the run is crucial, as it needs to be timed perfectly to receive the pass and finish effectively.

    • Passing Precision – The passers should focus on playing accurate and well-weighted passes to ensure the third-man runner can receive the ball in stride and set up a clean finish.

    • Quick Decision-Making – Players should develop the ability to make quick decisions regarding when to play the ball, when to make the run, and when to finish. This involves good spatial awareness and anticipation of the movements of teammates.

    • Finishing Under Control – When the third-man pass is received, players should focus on finishing with composure, using their second touch to place the ball accurately into the goal.

  • Add a Defender to Pressure the Finish
Introduce a passive defender to provide light pressure as the third-man runner receives the pass and prepares to finish. This will challenge the attacker to stay composed under pressure and make quicker decisions.

    Focus:
Helps players practice finishing under pressure and improve the timing and accuracy of their third-man runs.

  • Increase the Number of Combinations
Expand the practice to involve multiple third-man combinations in sequence. For example, after the first third-man finish, the ball is quickly recycled to a new combination and a new third-man run, keeping the drill fluid and fast-paced.

    Focus:
Improves players’ ability to link multiple third-man runs together and maintain a high tempo in attacking situations.
