Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 11 | Pitch size: Half Pitch

  • This practice begins with an unopposed build-up sequence on a half-pitch setup. A centre back starts the play by passing to a full back, who then connects inside to a central midfielder. This phase is designed to simulate structured buildup from the back, with all players receiving and playing under no pressure to begin with.

Once the central midfielder receives the ball, they play a disguised or timed through ball back toward the starting direction of the practice. At that moment, a 1v1 duel begins between an attacker running onto the through ball and a defender who recovers to challenge. The attacker’s aim is to beat the defender and finish on goal.

  • • Structured Build-Up: Emphasise clean passing, proper body shape, and correct receiving angles in the unopposed build-up phase to replicate real-game rhythm.

    • Timing of the Pass: Central midfielders should time their through balls precisely, matching the forward’s run and ensuring the ball arrives in stride.

    • Attacking the Space: Attackers should accelerate quickly onto the through ball, using body feints or touches to unbalance the recovering defender.

    • Defensive Recovery: Defenders must transition rapidly from passive to active, tracking the attacker’s run while positioning to delay or tackle cleanly.

  • Add Passive Pressure in Build-Up Phase

Introduce passive defenders to apply light pressure during the initial build-up sequence to increase scanning and urgency without disrupting rhythm.

Focus: Enhances composure, decision-making, and spatial awareness during the early stages of possession.

  • Add a Second Recovering Defender

A second recovering defender starts deeper and joins the 1v1 late, potentially turning it into a 2v1 defensive scenario if they arrive in time.

Focus: Encourages the attacker to make quicker decisions and adds realism to the counter-attacking transition.
