Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 14 | Pitch size: 30x50

  • Play starts with the team in possession controlling the ball in one half of the pitch, with the objective of breaking the opposition down and creating a scoring opportunity. The attacking team must maintain possession, create space, and work through the opposition’s defense to score.

If the defending team wins possession, they are required to play a forward pass into the space on the unoccupied side of the grid. This triggers a 2v1 counter-attack, with two wingers joining the play against one recovering defender who is attempting to prevent the goal-scoring opportunity.

  • • Controlled Possession: The attacking team should focus on patience, quick passing, and intelligent movement to create openings. Encourage players to work together, maintaining possession and looking for gaps in the opposition's defensive setup.

    • Defensive Transition: Upon losing possession, the defending team must quickly react and apply pressure to prevent an easy counter-attack. Focus on tracking runners and recovering defensive positions quickly.

    • Quick Forward Pass: When the defending team gains possession, they must look for a quick, accurate forward pass to initiate the counter-attack. This pass should exploit the unoccupied side of the grid, allowing the attacking wingers to get into advanced positions.

    • 2v1 Counter-Attack: The wingers should focus on using speed and good decision-making to exploit the 2v1 situation. The defender in the counter-attack must communicate effectively and try to slow down the attacking wingers until help arrives.

  • Limit the Time in Possession:

Impose a time limit for the attacking team to maintain possession (e.g., 20 seconds) before they must attempt a shot. This encourages faster decision-making and more dynamic movement when attacking, while also increasing the pressure on the defending team.

Focus: Encourages the attacking team to make quicker decisions when progressing the ball forward, while also pressuring the defending team to be more proactive in winning possession.

  • Add More Defenders in Transition:

Introduce an additional defender into the counter-attack phase to create a 3v2 situation. The defending team must now react faster and work harder to counter the overload, while the attacking wingers need to maintain their composure and exploit the additional defender.

Focus: Enhances the attacking team’s ability to deal with added defensive pressure, while improving the defending team’s ability to recover and deal with overload situations.
