Instructions/Setup:
In this unopposed finishing drill, four players are positioned in a diamond shape on the edge of the penalty area. The drill focuses on quick passing combinations and movement to create shooting opportunities. Players work through various combinations, ensuring that all four players are involved in the build-up before a shot on goal.
The ball is played between the players in different sequences, such as one-touch passes, wall passes, or quick give-and-go’s. After completing the combination, the player receiving the final ball takes a shot at goal. This drill emphasizes precise passing, movement off the ball, and clinical finishing.
Coaching Notes:
• Quick Combinations: Focus on quick, one-touch passes to maintain the speed of play and break down the defensive line. Encourage players to keep the ball moving at a fast tempo to create space for the final shot.
• Movement Off the Ball: Emphasize the importance of players moving into space after making a pass. Players should be proactive, constantly looking for an opportunity to receive the ball or create a passing lane for their teammate.
• Finishing: Encourage players to focus on composure and accuracy when taking the shot. Players should vary their finishing techniques, such as placing the ball in the corners or using quick reactions for volleys and first-time shots.
• Timing of Runs: Timing is key in this drill. Players must time their runs into the box and receive the ball in stride, which will help them create better shooting angles and avoid being caught offside.
Progression 1: Add Pressure from a Defender:
Introduce a defender who starts at a distance and closes down the player receiving the ball for the final shot. This forces the attacker to take quicker decisions, improve their shooting under pressure, and execute a better finish.
Focus: Improves the attacking team’s ability to deal with defensive pressure and take shots with precision under time constraints.
Progression 2: Vary the Passing Combinations:
Change the passing combinations so that players are forced to use different techniques and engage in more dynamic movements. For example, include diagonal passes, through balls, or flicks to increase the complexity of the drill.
Focus: Develops versatility in attacking play, encouraging players to be creative and use different passing techniques to create goal-scoring opportunities.
