Instructions/Setup:

In this unopposed drill, the attacking player dribbles up toward the goal area before turning back through a marked gate and attempting to score. The focus is on quick direction changes and sharp turns, simulating a real game scenario where the attacker must quickly react to the defender’s positioning.

The defender starts from a marked position and sprints down the box, turning back through the same gate before attempting to close down the attacker and prevent the shot. The drill promotes sharp decision-making, quick reactions, and finishing under pressure.

Coaching Notes:

• Quick Direction Changes: Emphasize the importance of quick and controlled changes in direction when turning through the gate. This will help the attacker deceive the defender and create a clearer path to goal.

• Defensive Positioning: Teach the defender to close the space effectively and maintain balance while sprinting and turning. The defender should aim to make the attacker feel pressured while not overcommitting too early.

• Finishing Under Pressure: Encourage the attacker to maintain composure when taking the shot. The goal is to finish accurately and efficiently, even when under pressure from the defender closing in.

• Timing of the Turn: Timing the turn is essential for both the attacker and defender. The attacker must turn quickly enough to maintain control of the ball and still have a chance to finish, while the defender must make sure they turn at the right moment to challenge the shot.

Progression 1: Add a Second Defender:

Introduce a second defender who pressures the attacker as they attempt to dribble and shoot. This will increase the challenge for the attacker and force them to make quicker decisions on when and how to shoot.

Focus: Increases decision-making speed, as the attacker must now navigate multiple defenders while maintaining composure and focus on their shot.

Progression 2: Vary the Gate Size:

Adjust the width of the gate to make it wider or narrower, which will force the attacker to adjust their dribbling and turning techniques. A narrower gate will require more precise dribbling and better control, while a wider gate may allow more freedom in movement.

Focus: Develops the ability to execute tight turns and precise dribbling under varying conditions, enhancing the attacker’s overall agility and adaptability.
