Instructions/Setup:

In this drill, players are positioned in a diamond shape and pass the ball around the diamond in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction. However, there is a twist: when a pass is made, the passer must follow their pass and run towards the receiver. The receiver, instead of simply receiving the ball, uses the oncoming player as a barrier and performs a skill (such as a feint, body swerve, or quick turn) to move around the passer and retrieve the ball on the opposite side. This encourages creativity and sharp movement off the ball.

The drill helps improve passing accuracy, off-the-ball movement, and the ability to use an incoming defender or teammate as a shield to execute quick skill moves.

Coaching Notes:

• Quick Movement After the Pass: Emphasize the importance of the passer moving quickly to support the receiver. The passer should stay dynamic and follow the ball with pace, creating a continuous flow of passing and movement.

• Use of the Barrier: Encourage the receiver to recognize when the passer is closing in and to use the oncoming player as a barrier for a quick turn or feint. This allows the player to maintain possession and move efficiently to the other side of the defender.

• Skill Execution: Focus on the variety and effectiveness of the skills performed by the receiver. The goal is to deceive the oncoming player using quick footwork or body movement, enabling the receiver to glide around and take control of the ball.

• Timing of the Turn: Timing is key when using the passer as a barrier. The receiver should execute the skill at the right moment to ensure they can evade the defender and retrieve the ball without losing possession.

Progression 1: Increase the Pace:

Increase the tempo of the drill, requiring players to make quicker decisions and execute their skills under more pressure. Reducing the time to perform the skill will simulate game-like scenarios where quick thinking and swift movements are essential.

Focus: Develops decision-making speed and the ability to execute skills under pressure while maintaining possession and composure.
