Instructions/Setup:
In this drill, play starts with an attacker completing an unopposed finish into the goal. Once the finishing phase is completed, the attacker must immediately transition and sprint through the central gate located in the middle of the practice area (a hexagon). The transitioning player then attempts to prevent the new attacker coming from the opposite side from scoring.
The practice area is set up as a hexagon with a gate at the center. The transitions are continuous, with players quickly shifting from offense to defense and back again, simulating a high-intensity, game-like scenario where players must be alert to both attacking and defensive responsibilities.
Coaching Notes:
• Transition Speed: Emphasize the importance of quick transitions between offense and defense. Players must immediately shift from their finishing phase to defensive duties, ensuring they cover the central gate and attempt to block the incoming attack.
• Finishing Under Pressure: Focus on the attacker’s ability to finish with composure and accuracy despite the transition to the defensive phase. Encourage quick, sharp shots on goal to capitalize on limited time and space.
• Defensive Awareness: Teach the defending player to quickly recognize the situation and sprint through the gate with urgency. Once through the gate, they must position themselves to block or intercept the new attacker's path to goal.
• Continuous Intensity: The drill should maintain a high tempo, requiring players to stay engaged throughout the entire practice. Players need to be alert and stay mentally focused, as there’s little downtime between attacking and defending.
