Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 8 | Pitch size: 40x30

  • This drill incorporates both technical skill development and fitness by combining a 2v2 small-sided game with shuttle runs. The drill starts with two players on each team playing a 2v2 match on one side of the grid, while the other side consists of 4 players completing shuttle runs. The aim is to work on both the game-related skills in the small-sided match and the physical conditioning through the shuttle runs.

Once a goal is scored in the 2v2 match, the teams switch zones. The players who were playing in the 2v2 now move to the shuttle run area, while the players who were doing shuttle runs switch to the 2v2 game. This ensures that all players are involved in both attacking/defending and fitness aspects of the practice.

  • • Quick Decision Making: In the 2v2 match, players need to make quick decisions in tight spaces, using short, accurate passes to break down the defense. Encourage players to be creative and look for quick combinations with their teammate.

    • Movement Off the Ball: Players should focus on their off-the-ball movements, making runs into space to receive passes and create options for their teammate. This helps improve positioning and awareness.

    • Shuttle Run Intensity: During the shuttle runs, players should focus on maintaining a high level of intensity and speed. Remind them to recover quickly between each shuttle and transition efficiently from sprinting to the next task.

    • Managing Fatigue: The transition between the 2v2 and shuttle runs should be swift, allowing players to experience both high-intensity periods and skill-building moments. Encourage players to manage their fatigue, as this drill challenges their physical and mental endurance.

  • Increase the Goal Scoring Requirement:

Set a requirement that a team must score two goals before switching zones. This will add a competitive element to the 2v2 game and encourage players to focus on both the attacking and defensive aspects of the small-sided game.

Focus: Encourages consistency in attack and defense, requiring players to maintain focus on their technical execution for a longer period.

  • Add Defenders to the Shuttle Run Area:

Introduce two defenders to the shuttle run area who will try to intercept or challenge the shuttle runners. The runners must still complete the shuttle runs but now have to navigate around defenders. This adds a challenge to the fitness aspect, simulating game-like pressure while improving conditioning.

Focus: Develops physical conditioning under pressure, improving players' ability to perform fitness tasks while under defensive pressure.
