Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 8 | Pitch size: 10x20

  • This unopposed drill focuses on improving technical passing and movement off the ball, specifically through overlapping runs. Players work in pairs, passing the ball to each other while completing overlapping runs. The pattern is designed to help players develop their passing accuracy, timing, and decision-making, while also improving their fitness through continuous movement.

The drill starts with two players at one end of the field, passing the ball back and forth. As the ball is passed, the player without the ball makes an overlapping run, receiving the ball back on the run to continue the sequence. Once the ball has traveled to the opposite end, the next pair of players will start the same pattern, working in the opposite direction. The practice continues with alternating pairs, ensuring players focus on both their passing technique and movement.

  • • Pass with Precision: Encourage players to focus on passing with accuracy, especially when delivering the ball for the overlapping run. The ball should be played into space, allowing the player making the run to receive it comfortably.

    • Timing of Overlapping Runs: The player making the overlapping run must time their movement well to receive the ball at the right moment. This ensures the run is effective and the player can continue the flow of the drill without interruption.

    • Body Shape for Receiving: Players receiving the ball should open their body to make the pass easier and prepare for a quick touch into space. Emphasize the importance of being prepared to receive the ball on the move.

    • Constant Movement: Encourage players to stay active throughout the drill. Once the ball is passed, players should move quickly to support their partner and be ready for the next pass. This keeps the tempo high and mimics real game situations.

  • Increase the Pace:

Increase the tempo of the drill, requiring quicker passes and faster overlapping runs. This will improve the players' ability to execute the pattern at a higher speed, simulating match conditions.

Focus: Improves passing speed, timing, and movement under pressure.

  • Add a Dribble and Pass Element:

Before the overlap, the player in possession of the ball must take one or two dribbles before passing. This progression forces the player to make quick decisions on when to pass and when to take on an opponent, improving dribbling under pressure and decision-making.

Focus: Encourages dribbling skills and decision-making when progressing the ball.
