Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 10 | Pitch size: 30x36

  • This dynamic finishing drill features two teams working simultaneously on opposite ends of the pitch, mirroring each other’s movements. Each player starts by dribbling up and around a pole, focusing on close ball control and sharp turns before shooting unopposed into the main goal. Immediately after their first shot, the player quickly turns and receives a pass to finish with a second shot into the opposite goal.

Because both players operate at the same time on either end, both goalkeepers remain actively involved throughout the drill, ensuring constant shooting practice and goalkeeper engagement. This setup encourages quick transitions, consistent finishing practice, and sustained focus over two successive phases.

  • • Encourage tight ball control and sharp dribbling around the pole – Players should focus on close touches, precise footwork, and maintaining speed and balance while under slight fatigue.

    • Stress the importance of quick, accurate finishing on both shots – Composure and proper technique are crucial to convert opportunities efficiently under time pressure and after intense effort.

    • Promote sharp awareness and body positioning when receiving the second pass – Effective first touches and good posture set up quality shooting opportunities immediately after turning sharply.

    • Emphasise continuous intensity and focus throughout both phases – Players need to maintain high concentration and mental resilience to execute back-to-back finishing effectively with minimal rest.

  • Introduce a passive defender applying light pressure after the pole dribble

This increases difficulty by encouraging better shielding, quicker decision-making, and improved composure under mild defensive pressure to simulate game-like scenarios.

Focus: Develops ball control under pressure, improves quick thinking, and builds confidence in tight finishing scenarios with realistic contest.

  • Add a time limit for completing both phases of the drill

This encourages players to increase tempo, improve cardiovascular fitness, and maintain accuracy under growing physical and mental fatigue during finishing practice.

Focus: Enhances stamina, speed of execution, and technical precision during high-intensity finishing sequences requiring sharpness under fatigue.
