Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 5 | Pitch size: 30x30

  • This drill focuses on individual defending and attacking in 1v1 situations, followed by a transition to a 2v2 scenario. The players will develop their ability to handle direct duels with an opponent and transition seamlessly into a more complex attacking scenario. The drill promotes both individual defending skills and team play in overloaded situations.

The drill begins with the first defender playing a diagonal pass to an attacker, initiating the first 1v1. After completing the 1v1, the second defender plays a similar diagonal pass to the second attacker, starting the second 1v1. Once both 1v1s are complete, the defending team will pass to the attackers, who now transition into a 2v2 situation in the same area, working together to try and score.

  • • 1v1 Defending Focus: In the 1v1 scenarios, defenders should focus on maintaining good positioning and timing their challenges well. Emphasize keeping their body between the attacker and the goal, using good footwork to block the attacker's path.

    • Quick Decision Making: Attackers in the 1v1 phase should focus on using their skills to beat the defender with quick changes of direction or acceleration. Encourage creativity in the attacker's movement to open up space for a shot or pass.

    • Seamless Transition to 2v2: After completing the 1v1s, attackers must quickly transition into a 2v2 scenario. Encourage them to communicate with their teammate, focusing on movement off the ball to create space and options for the player in possession.

    • Compact Defending in 2v2: In the 2v2 phase, defenders must work together to stay compact and limit space for the attackers. Emphasize the importance of positioning, covering, and anticipating the attackers' movements to force them into less dangerous areas.

  • Add a Neutral Player:

Introduce a neutral attacker to the 2v2 phase to create a 3v2 overload for the attacking team. This progression will challenge defenders to work on their communication and organization when facing an overload.

Focus: Helps defenders improve their ability to cope with overloads and work as a unit.

  • Add a Time Limit:

Limit the amount of time attackers have to score in the 2v2 scenario. This encourages quick decision-making and promotes urgency in both attacking and defending phases.

Focus: Improves reaction time, decision-making under pressure, and quick transitions.
