Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 19 | Pitch size: 60x30

  • This drill emphasizes building play through the thirds of the pitch, working on creating overloads in each zone to progress the ball effectively. It focuses on decision-making, timing of passes, and creating space for the player on the ball. The drill allows players to develop their ability to transition from defense to attack while maintaining possession and breaking down opposition lines.

Play starts in the first zone, where the team in possession has a 4v3 overload. Once the ball is successfully progressed into the central zone, one player from the first zone can join to form a 4v3 overload in the central area. Upon reaching the end zone, the team can once again overload with a 4v3. The ball must be moved from end to end, ensuring progression through each phase. If the defending team wins possession, they should look to counter and score into any of the four mini-goals placed in the end zones.

  • • Maintaining Width: The attacking team should stretch the field and maintain width throughout the build-up phase, creating space for the ball carrier to pass or drive forward.

    • Quick Transitions: Emphasize the quick transition from one zone to the next. As soon as possession is won, play should move quickly to the next area with fast and direct passing.

    • Overloading to Create Space: Players should be aware of the overload opportunities in each zone and work on quick support to help maintain the advantage and keep the attacking flow going.

    • Compact Defending: The defending team should remain compact, limiting space and forcing the attacking team to play wide or back. Encourage good pressing as soon as possession is won.

  • Limit Time in Each Zone:

To increase intensity, limit the amount of time the attacking team can spend in each zone. This forces quicker thinking, faster passes, and more dynamic movement.

Focus: Encourages quicker decision-making and improved passing speed under pressure.
