Instructions/Setup:
This drill focuses on quick transitions, 1v1 attacking, and defending under pressure. Both the attacker and defender will start by sprinting around a pole before entering the field of play. Once they enter the field, the coach serves a ball into the attacker, who then plays out a 1v1 scenario against the defender. This drill emphasizes explosive movements, quick thinking, and finishing under pressure.
Both players must react quickly and make immediate decisions upon entering the field, with the attacking player aiming to score and the defender working to stop them. The drill also includes a sprinting element, which keeps players engaged and sharp during transitions.
Coaching Notes:
• Quick Reactions: Both attacker and defender must focus on explosive movements, reacting to the coach’s ball serve quickly and efficiently.
• 1v1 Decision Making: Attackers should focus on their first touch and dribbling skills, looking for a chance to break the defender’s line. Defenders need to maintain close pressure and force the attacker into less dangerous areas.
• Finishing Under Pressure: Attackers must focus on their finishing skills in tight situations, while defenders should work on positioning and timing their challenges to prevent a goal.
• Transition Speed: Whether attacking or defending, players need to be aware of the transition to the next phase (sprinting back to the pole) after a goal or possession win, keeping the intensity high throughout.
Progression 1: Add a Defender:
Introduce a second defender to create a 2v1 situation for the attacker. This will force the attacker to make faster decisions and improve their ability to finish under more defensive pressure.
Focus: Enhances decision-making and quick ball movement under increased defensive pressure.
Progression 2: Add Time Limit for Reactions:
After a goal or possession win, introduce a time limit for how quickly players need to return to the pole and get ready for the next phase. This will emphasize conditioning and quick recovery after each play.
Focus: Builds endurance and forces players to recover quickly, maintaining intensity throughout the drill.
