Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 11 | Pitch size: 1/2 Pitch

  • This rondo starts with a 4v2 setup, with the goalkeeper involved for the team in possession. The team building possession aims to progress the ball through a narrower central channel and into the opposite side of the grid, where two out-of-possession players will follow to apply pressure. To facilitate this build-up, one player from the possession team can drop into the central grid to receive the ball and either help progress the play or drag the defending player out of position. This creates space for forward-breaking passes through the central channel.

  • • Build-Up Play with the Goalkeeper
Encourage the team in possession to use the goalkeeper effectively as a support player in their build-up phase. The goalkeeper should be comfortable with short passes and help to facilitate play, ensuring the ball is moved out of pressure while maintaining possession. This will allow the team to keep control and make intelligent forward passes.

    • Movement to Create Passing Lanes
The player dropping into the central grid needs to have excellent timing and movement. Their role is to create space by pulling the defenders out of position and facilitating the progression of the ball through the central channel. Focus on making sure this player is always aware of the positioning of the defenders and creates options for their teammates through clever, well-timed runs.

    • Utilize the Central Channel Effectively
The key objective of this practice is to progress the ball through the central channel. Encourage quick, decisive passes and support play to break the defensive line. Players should aim to make forward-thinking passes through the central grid, exploiting the space left when defenders are drawn out.

    • Pressure After Ball Loss
Once the ball is played into the opposite side of the grid and defenders press, remind the attacking team to maintain composure and look for quick, efficient solutions. Encourage the team to stay compact and continue passing and moving, especially under pressure, to either retain possession or transition quickly into the next phase of play.

  • Add More Defenders
Introduce additional defenders into the central grid to increase pressure on the possession team. For example, change to a 4v3 or 5v3 setup in the build-up phase.
Focus: This will force the possession team to play more quickly, make quicker decisions, and become more efficient in their build-up play.

  • Limit Touches for Possession Team
Limit the number of touches for the team in possession (e.g., 2 or 3 touches maximum). This forces faster ball movement, encouraging quicker decision-making and increasing the intensity of the practice.
Focus: This progression improves the team’s ability to play under pressure and develop sharper passing combinations in tight spaces.
