Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 14 | Pitch size: 1/3 Pitch

  • In this practice, the possession team aims to build and finish the attack against a 2-2 defensive formation, replicating the two central midfielders and two centre forwards from a 4-4-2 structure. The attacking team works to progress the ball centrally, using passing and movement to break down the defense. If the defending players win possession, they can counter-attack into the main goal, with two extra wide players joining the attack to facilitate fast breaks and transitions.

  • • Use of Central Space
Encourage the possession team to focus on building play through the central channels. Players should look to create passing lanes and overload the middle of the pitch with quick, dynamic passing. Players should make runs off the ball to support the player on the ball, helping to maintain possession and unlock the defensive structure.

    • Combination Play Between Midfielders and Forwards
The attacking team should look to use quick combinations between the central midfielders and forwards to break down the 2-2 defensive structure. Focus on sharp, one- or two-touch passing to progress the ball quickly and into dangerous areas. Encourage the forwards to drop deep to receive passes and link up with the midfield.

    • Defensive Transition and Counter-Attack
When the defending team wins possession, the focus is on transitioning quickly into attack. Encourage the defending team to counter-attack with speed, making use of the two wide players to stretch the opposition and create overloads in the attack. The wide players should be looking to receive early passes to exploit space on the flanks.

    • Recognizing Defensive Gaps
The attacking team must be aware of gaps in the defensive structure created by the 2-2 setup. Look for spaces between the midfielders and forwards, and exploit these openings with incisive passes. The central midfielders should aim to deliver passes into the feet of the forwards, or even play through balls into the space behind the defensive line.

  • Add Pressure to Possession Team
Add a third defender in the central zone to increase defensive pressure. This will force the possession team to move the ball faster and be more precise in their decision-making.
Focus: This progression helps to develop the attacking team’s ability to play quickly under pressure and recognize opportunities to break down a tighter defensive structure.

  • Limit Possession Team's Touches
Limit the number of touches each player can take (e.g., 2 touches maximum) to increase tempo and intensity in the practice.
Focus: This forces quicker, sharper passing and movement, helping the team develop a faster build-up and more dynamic attacking play.
