Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 8 | Pitch size: 1/3 Pitch

  • This attacking practice focuses on isolating the wide player in a 1v1 situation. Play starts with a switch of play to a wide player, who receives the ball in space. The wide player must then attack the space at speed, with the options to either create a crossing opportunity for teammates or find space to shoot on goal themselves.

As the wide player advances, 3 players (including the central midfielder (CM), center forward (CF), and wide attacker (WI)) must make runs into the box, providing options for the cross or finish.

The defending team consists of 3 players who start in a set position and must quickly slide and shift to put pressure on the receiving winger, aiming to block both shots and crosses.

  • • Wide Player's Role – The wide player should focus on attacking the space with speed, either to get by their defender or create a passing opportunity for a cross. Encourage the wide player to be decisive in their actions, reading the defender’s position and choosing whether to take them on, cross, or shoot.

    • Movement from Teammates – The central midfielder, center forward, and wide attacker should focus on timing their runs into the box, attacking different areas (near-post, far-post, or edge of the box) depending on the type of cross. Encourage the attackers to make dynamic runs and create space for themselves to receive a pass or finish a cross.

    • Defensive Pressure – The defending players need to focus on closing down the wide player quickly and ensuring they do not get a free shot or cross. They should be prepared to shift and slide as the wide player progresses towards goal, preventing both crosses into the box and potential shots on goal.

    • Decision-Making – The wide player should develop the ability to read the game and make quick decisions based on the positioning of the defenders and the attackers making runs into the box. Knowing when to cross and when to shoot is key to creating effective attacks.

  • Add Defensive Pressure
Introduce a second defender to create a 2v1 situation against the wide player. The wide attacker will now have to deal with increased defensive pressure, making it more challenging to create a cross or shot.

    Focus:
Improves the wide player’s decision-making and ability to beat multiple defenders, enhancing their ability to create under pressure.

  • Add a Goalkeeper
Incorporate a goalkeeper into the practice so that the wide player can shoot at goal after either taking on the defender or delivering a cross. The attackers should aim to finish any crosses or convert shots on goal while dealing with defensive pressure.

    Focus:
Simulates real match scenarios where wide players must make decisions while under pressure and aim for a goal.
