Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 12 | Pitch size: 30x30

  • In this practice, the team in possession plays 6v4 and should attempt to make ‘x’ amount of passes for a point. The objective is to develop counter pressing abilities. If the defending team (4 players) wins possession, the 6 players must immediately counter press to prevent the defenders from scoring into any of the 4 mini goals. The defending team can use 2 end line players for support if they win possession, which emphasizes the need for a quick and intense counter press from the attacking team to avoid conceding.

  • • Counter Pressing Reaction
As soon as possession is lost, the 6 attackers must immediately transition into a counter press, putting immediate pressure on the defenders and preventing easy progression. Encourage rapid movement to close passing lanes and force mistakes.

    • Intensity & Work Rate
Players must show a high level of intensity in their reaction to losing possession. The team in possession should not slow down the pace but continue pressing with urgency, anticipating and closing down spaces quickly.

    • Defensive Communication & Positioning
When the defenders regain possession, the 6 attackers should be vocal and position themselves effectively to prevent the counter. Ensure that the defenders maintain good shape and communication when using the end line players to create overloads.

    • Compactness & Supporting the Press
Encourage the 6 attackers to stay compact and work together when pressing. Players should cover each other’s space and limit passing options to force the defending team to play into pressure, reducing the opportunity for counter-attacks.

  • Limited Touches for Defenders
Limit the number of touches defenders can have to increase the pressure on the defending team. This makes it more difficult for them to play out and forces them into quicker decisions, thus improving the counter pressing intensity.
Focus: This progression enhances the speed and effectiveness of the counter press.

  • Additional End Line Player for Attackers
Introduce an extra neutral player for the attacking team who can help them maintain possession when under pressure. This creates a 7v4 scenario and gives the team in possession more space to work with, while encouraging the defending team to react even quicker when they regain possession.
Focus: This progression helps improve the defending team's reaction time and speed in regaining control.
