Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 5 | Pitch size: 1/3 Pitch

  • This finishing practice is built around three consecutive phases, challenging attackers to complete multiple finishing actions within a short time period. The attacker receives the ball from a variety of angles, including both central and wide areas, and must quickly adjust their movement, body shape and finishing technique for each repetition. The emphasis is on reacting to different types of service while maintaining composure and efficiency in front of goal.

The three phases run continuously, with the attacker expected to complete all finishes within a set time (e.g. under 20 seconds). This creates a physically and mentally demanding scenario, encouraging players to maintain technical quality, sharp decision-making and consistent execution despite fatigue and time pressure.

  • • First Touch Into Finish:
Encourage attackers to take a positive first touch that sets up a clean, controlled and efficient finishing action.

    • Body Shape and Balance:
Reinforce correct body positioning when receiving, allowing players to adjust quickly to different types of service.

    • Variety of Finishing Techniques:
Coach players to adapt their finish depending on the angle, height and speed of the incoming pass.

    • Composure Under Fatigue:
Emphasise staying calm and technically clean while completing multiple finishes in quick succession under pressure.

  • Time Constraint Reduction:
Reduce the overall time allowed to complete all three finishes to increase intensity and urgency.

    Focus:
Improves speed of execution, decision-making and ability to maintain quality under increased physical fatigue.

  • Touch Restriction Before Finish:
Limit the attacker to one or two touches before each finishing action during the sequence.

    Focus:
Develops sharper first-touch control, quicker preparation and more efficient finishing under time pressure.
