Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 8 | Pitch size: 1/2 Pitch

  • This finishing practice begins with a three-player wide combination designed to create a crossing opportunity. The wide unit can vary their patterns—using overlaps, underlaps or quick 1–2s—to beat the mannequin or defender and deliver a cross. After combining, two attackers make forward runs into the box, attacking different finishing zones as the cross is delivered.

Once the first finish is completed, the attacker who did not take the shot immediately turns to receive a pass from the coach. They must take their touch forward and finish into the opposite goal, creating a second finishing action under minimal pressure. The practice provides repeated opportunities to work on wide-area combinations, timing of box entries and quick transitions between finishing moments.

  • • Variety in Wide Combinations: Encourage overlapping, underlapping and bounce passes to keep the patterns unpredictable and game realistic.

    • Timing of Box Entries: Coach the attackers to stagger their runs—front zone, back-post, and cutback areas—to maximise finishing options.

    • Quality of Final Delivery: Reinforce accurate, purposeful crosses with the correct pace, height and angle to match the attackers’ movement.

    • Quick Reset for Second Finish: Highlight the importance of the supporting attacker reacting instantly to receive from the coach and finish cleanly.

  • Add a Passive Defender on the Cross:
Introduce a defender who applies light pressure to the crosser. This forces more precise execution of the delivery and encourages better timing from the attackers.

Focus: Improves delivery accuracy, movement coordination and realism.

  • Add a Recovering Defender for the Second Shot:
Allow a recovering defender to pressure the attacker receiving from the coach. This increases demand on touch, speed and composure for the second finish.

Focus: Enhances finishing under pressure and quick decision-making.
