Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 10 | Pitch size: 1/3 Pitch

  • This finishing practice is designed to create realistic pressure moments inside the final third. Play begins with a defender serving a pass into the first attacker. Immediately after releasing the ball, the defender must sprint back to recover into position. The first attacker then sets or plays a pass into the second attacker, who must take their touch forward and attempt to finish quickly.

The practice can be run in two variations. In the 1v1 version, only the second attacker engages the recovering defender, working to finish under direct pressure. In the 2v1 version, the first attacker joins the phase after playing the initial pass, creating a numerical advantage and allowing for combinations before the finish. Both options emphasise speed, timing and composure when finishing under pressure.

  • • Quality of the Set Pass: Encourage the first attacker to cushion the set into the second attacker’s path, enabling a forward touch and clean finish.

    • Forward Touch and Body Shape: Reinforce that the second attacker should take their first touch into space and open their body to finish early.

    • Defender’s Recovery Line: Coach the defender to sprint with intent, recover centrally and angle their approach to narrow the finishing angle.

    • Composure Under Pressure: Highlight calm final actions—attackers should stay balanced and make quick decisions as the defender arrives.

  • Limit the Number of Touches:
Allow the second attacker no more than two touches before finishing. This increases demand on first-touch quality and quick decision-making.

Focus: Improves sharpness in front of goal and execution under pressure.

  • Defender Starts Closer or Further Back:
Adjust the defender’s starting distance depending on ability or desired intensity. Closer starting points increase pressure quickly, while further distances create more time for attackers to execute.

Focus: Develops adaptability and realism in both attacking and defensive behaviours.
