Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 15 | Pitch size: 10x30

  • This practice, known as the Rondo Gauntlet, is designed to combine conditioning demands with high-intensity defensive pressing. Three small rondo grids are set up in a line. Each grid contains three possession players, creating a 3v2 scenario whenever defenders enter. Two defenders begin in the first grid and must attempt to win possession as quickly as possible.

Once the defenders force a turnover in the first grid, they must sprint immediately into the second grid and repeat the press. After regaining possession there, they transition into the third grid to complete the final 3v2. The sequence is continuous and physically demanding, challenging the defenders’ work rate, coordination and pressing habits, while the possession players focus on quick combinations and evasion.

  • • High-Intensity Pressing: Encourage defenders to enter each grid at sprint speed, close distances quickly and work together to force predictable errors.

    • Quick Ball Circulation: Reinforce fast, sharp passing from the possession players to move the ball away from pressure and maintain control.

    • Transition Speed: Coach defenders to react instantly after each regain—accelerating into the next grid without hesitation.

    • Body Shape and Angles: Highlight curved pressing runs to screen passes and cut off central options, improving pressing efficiency.

  • Time Limit Per Grid:
Give the defenders a strict time window (e.g., 6 seconds) to win possession in each grid. Failure resets the rep. This raises intensity and sharpens pressing decisions.

Focus: Improves urgency, anticipation and defensive coordination.

  • Touch Limit for Possession Players:
Introduce a two-touch maximum inside all grids. This increases tempo, forces sharper movement and makes the defensive press more realistic.

Focus: Develops quick combinations, better support angles and rapid ball circulation.
