Instructions/Setup:

In this unopposed finishing drill, the focus is on creating and finishing goal-scoring opportunities from wide positions. The winger starts with the ball on the flank and plays a short pass backward to the midfielder, positioned centrally. The midfielder then clips a ball over the defensive line for the attacking player who has made a timed run in behind. The attacker has the option to finish with a header, volley, or controlled touch, depending on the delivery and timing of their run.

This drill helps improve timing, awareness, and finishing techniques under realistic match conditions.

Coaching Notes:

• Winger’s Passing Accuracy: The winger must ensure the pass is accurate, allowing the midfielder to easily receive and deliver the ball over the top. A well-timed and precise pass is essential for the attacker's success.

• Midfielder’s Timing and Delivery: The midfielder should focus on timing their pass and delivering it with the right weight and height to match the attacker’s run. The ball must be clipped over the defensive line to allow the attacker to stay onside.

• Attacker’s Run and Timing: The attacker should focus on making their run just as the pass is being played, timing it to stay onside and be in a prime position to receive the ball in stride. The run should be direct and quick.

• Finishing Variety: The attacker must be prepared to finish using various techniques, such as a header, volley, or controlled touch and finish, depending on the ball's delivery and where they are when receiving it.

Progression 1: Add Pressure:

Introduce a defender to apply light pressure on the attacking player after the ball is played over the top. The attacker must still focus on the run and finishing technique while dealing with the pressure.

Focus: This progression adds an element of decision-making under pressure, mimicking real match situations.

Progression 2: Multiple Attacking Runs:

Increase the number of attacking players in the drill, allowing for different options for the midfielder to pass to. The attacker can now choose from a wider variety of runs and finishing techniques.

Focus: This adds complexity and encourages decision-making on the ball while enhancing teamwork and communication.
