Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 10 | Pitch size: 30x25

  • In this 2+1v2+1 drill, play begins with a 2v2 battle in a central grid. Each team is supported by a neutral player positioned on their end line ahead of the grid, who acts as a free player when their team is in possession, creating a 3v2 numerical advantage. The primary objective for each team is to use effective dribbling and combination play to navigate through either of the two gates positioned on the left and right sides of their respective end line.

This setup encourages quick decision-making, exploiting overloads, and sharp dribbling skills under pressure while emphasizing spatial awareness and teamwork to unlock defensive structures.

  • • Encourage effective use of the neutral player to create overloads – Players should quickly identify and utilize the numerical advantage by combining with the neutral for easier gate entries.

    • Stress sharp dribbling skills and timing when attacking gates – Attacking players must use controlled touches and sudden changes of pace or direction to beat defenders.

    • Promote defensive communication and compactness – Defenders should stay organized, communicate constantly, and anticipate passes to prevent attackers from exploiting the gates.

    • Highlight quick transitions between offense and defense – Players must react swiftly when possession changes to either defend or attack the gates effectively.

  • Limit Touches to 2 Per Player

Impose a two-touch maximum to increase tempo and force faster decision-making, encouraging sharper passing and quicker ball control under pressure.

Focus: Develops technical sharpness, speed of play, and encourages players to think and act quickly in tight situations.

  • Add a Time Limit to Score

Teams must complete the gate dribble and score within a limited timeframe (e.g., 10 seconds) after gaining possession, increasing urgency and pressure in attack phases.

Focus: Builds intensity, enhances quick transition play, and forces players to make faster decisions while maintaining control.
