Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 12 | Pitch size: 40x36

  • This is a progressive possession drill designed to replicate game-realistic build-up under increasing pressure. Play begins with a 4v2 rondo in a tight central grid, focusing on sharp passing, movement, and supporting angles. Once the team in possession completes a set number of passes or a successful trigger, they break out into a 5v3 phase that expands the playing area and includes wider options.

After maintaining possession in the 5v3, the drill expands again into a full 7v5 possession game across a small-sided pitch. The 7 includes 2 goalkeepers who can be used as outlets or to recycle play. If the team of 5 wins the ball in this final phase, they can counter and score into either of the two main goals. The transitions between phases test composure, awareness, and decision-making under pressure as numerical advantages reduce.

  • • Encourage constant scanning before receiving – Players must read pressure, identify space, and make quicker decisions based on visual cues to avoid unnecessary turnovers or forced errors.

    • Emphasise quality of the first touch – It should set up the next action efficiently while avoiding pressure and maintaining tempo, especially under tight, high-pressure conditions.

    • Reinforce body shape when receiving – Players should receive on the half-turn with hips open to switch or progress play more easily, allowing them to exploit space in either direction.

    • Use the goalkeepers to recycle intelligently – Goalkeepers should remain calm and offer safe outlets that help shift or reset play with purpose, encouraging wider pitch usage and controlled tempo.

  • Limited Touch Rondo Phases

Reduce touches in both the 4v2 and 5v3 phases to 2-touch or 1-touch play, forcing quicker decisions and improving passing tempo under tighter time constraints.

Focus: Develops speed of play, technical execution, and fast support angles under controlled pressure environments.

  • Time-Limited Final Phase

Add a 10–12 second time limit to score in the 7v5 phase. If the team fails to score or loses possession, play resets to the 4v2. Defending team gains a point for each successful stop.

Focus: Encourages urgency, structured penetration, and intelligent final-third decision-making against defensive overloads.
