Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 6 | Pitch size: 25x20

  • This is a dynamic 1v1 drill focused on attacking with purpose and recovering to defend. The practice begins with the defender dribbling toward the two mini goals at the top end of the grid and playing a firm pass into either mini goal. Simultaneously, the attacker dribbles up the opposite side and plays a quick 1-2 combination with a supporting player before turning sharply.

After their respective movements, the attacker immediately drives forward and attempts to score into either of the mini goals. The defender, after passing into the goal, must quickly recover and defend 1v1. This practice helps develop recovery speed, sharp changes of direction, and creative attacking decisions under pressure.

  • • Stress the importance of defensive recovery runs – Defenders must react quickly, angle their run effectively, and regain compact positioning to delay the attacker.

    • Encourage aggressive forward play from attackers – Attackers should drive at the defender with controlled speed, using changes of direction and body feints to unbalance them.

    • Reinforce quality of the 1-2 combination – The initial wall pass should be played firmly and accurately to maintain tempo and allow a smooth turn and attack.

    • Highlight finishing decision under pressure – Attackers should scan early, select the best mini goal, and execute a composed finish despite recovering pressure from the defender.

  • Touch Restriction Before 1v1

Limit the attacker to two touches after receiving the 1-2 before they must engage the defender 1v1 and attempt to score.

Focus: Increases speed of execution and demands tighter control and quicker decision-making.

  • Add a Recovery Incentive

Award a point to defenders if they win the ball or force the attacker to miss the mini goals within 5 seconds of the 1v1 phase starting.

Focus: Encourages urgent recovery runs and competitive defending while motivating attackers to be decisive and efficient.
