Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 7 | Pitch size: 20x40

  • In this low block penetration drill, two attacking players look to move the ball quickly in order to manipulate and shift three defenders who are protecting a central line. The defenders are tasked with staying compact, denying passing lanes, and blocking direct access to the striker positioned behind them.

The attacking pair must work at tempo, using movement, disguise, and ball speed to create an opening. Once a gap is found, they must play a penetrative pass through or around the block into the striker, who receives behind the defenders. If successful, the striker finishes unopposed on goal. The focus is on patience, timing, and execution when facing a structured low block.

  • • Emphasise ball speed and disguise in possession – Attackers must move the ball sharply with minimal touches and use subtle body movements to shift the block.

    • Reinforce compact positioning and lateral movement for defenders – Defenders should remain disciplined, slide as a unit, and communicate to prevent line-splitting passes.

    • Focus on the striker's timing and movement – Striker should stay alert, constantly adjust positioning, and show for the ball at the right moment to receive cleanly.

    • Encourage patience and creativity in possession – Attackers must not force the play but use clever angles, feints, and changes in rhythm to open a passing lane.

  • Limit Time in Possession

Allow the attacking pair only 8 seconds to break the block and find the striker behind the defensive line. Start the timer as soon as the first pass is made.

Focus: Forces quick decision-making, promotes faster ball circulation, and simulates real pressure scenarios with urgency and composure under time constraints.

  • Add a Pressing Defender on the Striker

Include a recovering defender who pressures the striker immediately upon receiving the ball behind the line. This defender starts 5 yards away and closes down at speed.

Focus: Tests the striker’s ability to control under pressure, receive on the half-turn, and finish quickly while adapting to defensive pressure.
