Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 9 | Pitch size: 40x36

  • This drill begins with a 1v1 phase where a defender passes to an attacker on the left side of the grid before immediately applying pressure to prevent a goal-scoring opportunity. The focus is on quick reactions, individual defending, and forcing poor decisions or rushed shots from the attacker.

After the first phase ends (either with a goal or a defensive stop), the opposite defender on the right side plays a pass into a second attacker. This begins the second phase — a 2v2 — as the original attacker and defender stay involved. The emphasis now shifts to defending as a pair and making decisions based on the positioning of teammates and attackers.

  • • Stress intensity in the recovery run – Defenders must sprint quickly after the pass, close the space immediately, and apply intelligent pressure to reduce shooting angles.

    • Reinforce timing and angle of defensive approach – Defenders should bend their run to force attackers wide, staying low and balanced to delay or block shots.

    • Encourage awareness during transition between phases – Defenders and attackers need to quickly adapt as the situation shifts to 2v2, adjusting positions and roles on the fly.

    • Promote communication and defensive shape in 2v2 – Defenders must talk constantly, stay compact, and avoid getting split while covering space and tracking runners.

  • Add a Recovery Line for Defenders

Add a line 5 yards behind each defender. They must sprint around it before engaging the attacker. This adds a recovery element and realism to the initial 1v1 duel.

Focus: Emphasises physical recovery speed, defensive transition, and the ability to recover ground before engaging attackers in realistic defensive situations.

  • Add a Support Pass Option for Attackers

Introduce a neutral support player behind the play that attackers can use once in the 2v2 phase to create overloads or play bounce passes.

Focus: Develops decision-making, third-player movement, and encourages attackers to combine intelligently when under pressure in tight areas.
