Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 12 | Pitch size: 1/3 Pitch

  • This practice begins with a 5v4 inside a central playing area. The team of five attackers aims to break down the defensive four by circulating the ball at high tempo, using quick combinations and sharp movement to create gaps through the middle or find opportunities to play around the defensive block. Two additional attacking players are positioned in wide channels, offering an outlet to progress the attack if central penetration is not possible.

The attacking team can score by breaking through centrally or by finding one of the wide players and progressing the attack towards goal. Once the ball has moved beyond the central grid, the attackers play the phase out to a finish. If the defensive team wins possession and secures control, they can transition quickly and score into any of the three mini goals around the outside. This encourages realistic defensive transitions and rewards clean regains.

  • • Speed of Circulation: Encourage the attacking team to move the ball quickly to disrupt the defensive shape and force defenders to constantly adjust.

    • Play Through or Around: Coach players to recognise central gaps early but also identify moments to bounce wide and progress through the wide players if the middle is compact.

    • Supporting Angles: Reinforce the need for constant movement off the ball—showing between lines, rotating positions and creating passing lanes to maintain flow.

    • Defensive Transition: Highlight the importance of reacting instantly if the ball is lost—delay the counter, protect the middle and prevent quick finishes into the mini goals.

  • Touch Limit for Central Attackers:
Apply a two-touch limit inside the central grid to increase the speed of decision-making and force sharper combinations.

Focus: Raises tempo, improves quick support play and encourages faster ball movement.

  • Allow Wide Players to Join After First Wide Pass:
Once the ball is played into a wide channel player, allow that wide player to break into the central space and join the attack. This creates dynamic overloads and provides more finishing options.

Focus: Develops timing, third-man runs and more unpredictable attacking patterns.
