Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 13 | Pitch size: 1/3 Pitch
This practice begins with a 3v2 attacking overload in a central area. The three attackers aim to combine quickly, commit defenders and create a finishing opportunity before the defensive pair can delay or force mistakes. Once the first phase is completed through a goal, save or turnover, the coach immediately initiates the second phase.
In phase two, the ball is played out to a wide player who can drive down the wing unopposed and deliver a cross into the box for the same three attackers. However, the defensive team has full-backs positioned to prevent or block the cross, meaning the winger must choose the right moment, angle and delivery technique. The attackers then attempt to finish from the cross, while defenders react and try to stop the second wave.
• Exploit the Overload Early: Encourage the central attackers to combine at speed—using third-man runs, quick passing and movement to take advantage of the 3v2.
• Quality of Final Pass: Reinforce the importance of timing and weight of the final ball before the shot in phase one.
• Crossing Precision: Coach the winger to recognise the defender’s positioning and deliver crosses with accuracy, disguise or varied height to beat the full-back.
• Box Movement: Emphasise coordinated movements from the three attackers—front-post, back-post and second-phase positions to increase finishing options.
Add a Recovery Defender Into the Box:
Allow one central defender from phase one to recover and defend the cross in phase two. This increases realism and forces attackers to adjust their timing and movement inside the box.
Focus: Improves decision-making and finishing under increased defensive pressure.
Limit Time Before the Cross:
Give the wide player a 2–3 second limit to deliver the cross once they receive the ball. This forces quicker execution and more realistic tempo against full-back pressure.
Focus: Enhances crossing speed, delivery quality and attacking anticipation.
