Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 16 | Pitch size: 30x15

  • This practice uses two rondo grids with a middle transition zone and four teams of four players. Two teams begin in possession, one in each rondo grid, while the other two teams start in the central zone as defenders. The practice runs continuously for a set time period to create high-intensity pressing and repeated transition efforts.

Each defending team sends two players into their assigned rondo grid (top or bottom) to press in a 4v2 situation and attempt to win possession. Once they win the ball or force a turnover, both defenders must sprint out of the grid and return to the middle zone. Their two resting teammates then immediately sprint into the same grid to take over the press. This pressing cycle repeats non-stop, creating a physically demanding exercise that blends technical quality with high-energy defensive work.

  • • High Tempo Possession: Encourage the possession teams to play quickly with crisp one- or two-touch passing to escape pressure and maintain control.

    • Pressing Intensity: Reinforce the need for defenders to enter the grid at full speed, close distances quickly and work together to force predictable mistakes.

    • Quick Transitions: Highlight the importance of sprinting out of the grid immediately after a regain and triggering the next pair to enter, maintaining continuous flow.

    • Support Positions: Coach possession players to constantly adjust angles and distance to keep the ball moving efficiently and avoid getting boxed in.

  • Touch Limit for Possession Team:
Introduce a two-touch limit inside each rondo. This forces quicker thinking, sharper ball movement and increased physical demands due to faster tempo.

Focus: Improves decision-making speed, tempo of play and technical quality under pressure.

  • Scoring System for Defenders:
Award defenders a point for each clean regain within a set time (e.g., within 5 seconds of entering). This motivates coordinated pressing and more aggressive defensive actions.

Focus: Develops collective pressing behaviours, anticipation and defensive work ethic.
