Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 8 | Pitch size: 30x30

  • This practice focuses on receiving under pressure with realistic timing and movement patterns. Play begins with the attacker making a sharp run toward a mannequin before checking off at an angle to create space. As they move away from the mannequin, a supporting player plays a pass into their path. The attacker must receive cleanly, take their touch forward and attempt to finish into the mini goal.

As soon as the pass is released, a recovering defender sprints from behind to apply immediate pressure on the receiver. Their aim is to close the distance quickly, disrupt the attacker’s first touch and prevent the shot. This creates a game-realistic scenario where attackers must receive on the move, protect the ball and stay composed under pressure.

  • • Sharp Check Movement: Encourage the attacker to check off the mannequin with tempo, using the movement to create separation before receiving.

    • First Touch Direction: Reinforce taking the touch forward and into space, setting up the finish while protecting the ball from the recovering defender.

    • Body Positioning: Coach players to scan early, open their hips and receive on the half-turn to maintain forward momentum.

    • Composure Under Pressure: Highlight staying calm during the finish—attackers should focus on clean execution despite the defender closing down.

  • Add a Touch Limit Before Shooting:
Limit the attacker to two touches before finishing. This demands a cleaner first touch and quicker preparation for the shot.

Focus: Sharpens first-touch quality and improves speed of decision-making.

  • Adjust the Defender’s Starting Distance:
Bring the recovering defender closer or further away depending on ability level. This increases or decreases the intensity and forces the attacker to adapt their movement and timing.

Focus: Develops adaptability, receiving awareness and real-game pressure handling.
