Vaduz Countering With Speed
ADDED TO FAVOURITES

Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 6 | Pitch size: 40x36
In this counter-attacking practice, play begins with a midfielder dribbling forward toward a central grid before attempting to play a pass into one of two attackers positioned ahead. A defender starts on the line between them, attempting to block or intercept the pass and prevent the attack from progressing. The midfielder must choose the correct moment and angle to break the line and find one of the attackers.
If the pass successfully reaches either attacker, the two attackers immediately combine to attack the main goal in a 2v1 situation against a central defender. As the attack develops, the defender who initially started on the line must sprint back to recover into the play, attempting to turn the scenario into a 2v2. This forces the attackers to recognise the temporary overload and attack with speed before the recovering defender can rebalance the situation.
• Quality of the Penetrative Pass:
Encourage midfielders to disguise their forward pass, choosing the correct timing and weight to break defensive pressure.
• Speed of Counter-Attack:
Reinforce attackers reacting quickly to the forward pass and driving directly toward goal before defenders recover.
• Decision Making in the Overload:
Coach attackers to commit the defender and release the pass at the correct moment to maximise the 2v1 advantage.
• Recovery Effort from the Defender:
Emphasise explosive sprinting and recovery positioning to disrupt the attack and delay the finishing opportunity.
Time Limit on the Attack:
Introduce a short time window for the attackers to finish once the forward pass is completed.
Focus:
Encourages urgency in counter-attacking situations, faster attacking decisions and more clinical finishing under realistic game pressure.
Touch Restriction for Attackers:
Limit the attackers to two or three touches each during the counter-attacking phase.
Focus:
Improves speed of play, technical execution and quicker recognition of passing or shooting opportunities under pressure.
