Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 14 | Pitch size: 46x50

  • This practice is organised across two connected zones with identical structures. In each zone, the possession team consists of four outfield players plus one goalkeeper, creating a 5v2 against two pressing defenders. Both zones operate simultaneously. The objective for the possession teams is to retain the ball under pressure while looking to score into any of the four mini goals positioned centrally between the two zones.

The possession teams can score in two ways. They are awarded two points for scoring into a mini goal from their own zone, or one point for successfully switching play across the grid into the opposite possession zone. The defending players must prioritise protecting the mini goals while also pressing to regain possession. If the defenders win the ball, they are encouraged to attack quickly and score immediately, reinforcing realistic transition behaviours.

  • • Scanning and Decision-Making: Encourage players to constantly scan both their own zone and the opposite zone to recognise when to secure possession and when to switch play.

    • Goalkeeper Involvement: Reinforce the use of the goalkeeper as a key build-up player to create overloads and improve circulation under pressure.

    • Speed of Circulation: Highlight the importance of moving the ball quickly to draw defenders out and open passing lanes into the mini goals or across zones.

    • Defensive Priorities: Coach defenders to protect central spaces first, screen passes into mini goals, and then press with control when triggers appear.

  • Touch Limit for Possession Teams:
Apply a two-touch limit for all outfield players in possession. This increases the speed of ball circulation and forces quicker decisions in both zones.

Focus: Improves tempo, scanning behaviour and technical efficiency under pressure.

  • Allow One Defender to Press Across Zones:
Permit one defender to recover or press into the opposite zone after a switch. This reduces time on the ball for the receiving team and increases realism.

Focus: Develops quicker ball movement, awareness of pressure and sharper positioning after switches of play.
