Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 12 | Pitch size: 46x50

  • This practice begins with an unopposed finishing action. Play starts with a pass played into an attacker positioned near a mannequin. The attacker must receive, turn sharply around the mannequin and finish on goal with speed and composure. This phase focuses on quick receiving, body shape and clean execution in front of goal.

As soon as the finish is completed, that same attacker must immediately transition into a defensive role to face a live 2v1 against two new attackers. The defending player must delay, protect the central space and attempt to prevent a shot. After the 2v1 phase is complete, the teams swap roles and repeat the sequence, ensuring all players experience both the unopposed finishing action and the defensive transition into an overloaded scenario.

  • • Sharp Turn and Finish: Encourage attackers to open their body on the turn, take their first touch forward and finish with minimal delay.

    • Immediate Transition Reaction: Reinforce the need for instant mindset change—attack to defend with urgency and defensive intent.

    • 2v1 Defending Principles: Coach the recovering defender to delay, angle their run to show wide and protect central spaces.

    • Attacking Decision-Making: Highlight the importance of committing the defender in the 2v1 and releasing the pass at the right moment.

  • Add a Time Limit on the Unopposed Finish:
Introduce a 3–4 second window from receiving the ball to getting the shot away. This increases urgency and replicates realistic match pressure.

Focus: Improves speed of execution and finishing under time pressure.

  • Allow the Defender to Counter After Winning Possession:
If the recovering defender wins the ball in the 2v1 phase, allow them to counter and score into a small target goal or dribble through a gate.

Focus: Develops realistic transition behaviours and defensive motivation.
