Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 10 | Pitch size: 25x25

  • This possession practice is set up as a 7v3 rondo with a central target area. The seven attacking players aim to retain possession under pressure while also looking to penetrate between the three defenders. Four mini goals are positioned back-to-back in the centre of the grid, providing clear targets for vertical penetration.

The attackers are rewarded with one point for completing a designated number of passes and two points for successfully breaking defensive lines and scoring through any of the central mini goals. The three defenders work as a unit to screen passes, protect the central targets and apply coordinated pressure to force turnovers.

  • • Play Between the Lines: Encourage attackers to recognise moments when defenders are disconnected and disguise penetrative passes through the block.

    • Patience vs Penetration: Reinforce the importance of circulating the ball with purpose—drawing defenders out before threading passes in behind or between.

    • Body Shape to Receive Forward: Coach players to open up their hips on reception, allowing them to play forward quickly once space appears.

    • Defensive Compactness: Highlight the need for the three defenders to stay close and connected to prevent split passes.

  • Touch Limit for Possession Team:
Apply a two-touch limit for the seven attackers. This increases tempo and demands sharper movement and quicker combinations to create penetration opportunities.

Focus: Improves speed of play, awareness and technical efficiency.

  • Allow Defenders to Score on Regain:
If the defenders win the ball, allow them to score into two small target goals outside the grid. This adds a transition element and rewards aggressive, coordinated pressing.

Focus: Develops defensive transition mindset and purposeful regains.
