Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 18 | Pitch size: 1/2 Pitch

  • This practice combines repeated pressing actions with a competitive finishing outcome. Play begins with two defending players sprinting into a central grid to press in a 2v4 rondo. Their objective is to work together to regain possession against the four attackers through coordinated pressing, pressing triggers and compact movement.

Once the two defenders successfully win possession, they immediately split into two separate smaller grids, each now defending in a 1v3 rondo. They must again attempt to regain the ball individually under fatigue. After winning possession for the second time, each player exits their grid and receives a pass from a coach to finish first time against a goalkeeper. The practice creates a physically demanding pressing sequence followed by a composed end product under fatigue.

  • • Pressing Triggers and Angles: Encourage players to press on poor touches, slow passes and when play is forced wide, using curved runs to block passing lanes.

    • Defensive Work Rate: Reinforce the importance of relentless effort, quick recovery steps and immediate re-engagement during all pressing phases.

    • Composure Under Fatigue: Coach players to stay calm in front of goal after intense physical effort, focusing on clean contact and placement.

    • Transition Speed: Highlight rapid movement between each phase—central press, split press and finishing—to keep intensity and realism high.

  • Time Limit to Regain Possession:
Add a 6–8 second time window in each rondo for defenders to win the ball. If they fail, the phase restarts. This sharpens pressing speed and collective reactions.

Focus: Improves pressing urgency, defensive decision-making and physical output.
