Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 3 | Pitch size: 30x30

  • In this unopposed finishing drill, the centre forward works through two distinct phases to develop shooting accuracy and passing precision. In Phase 1, the centre forward can shoot into either of the two main goals, each guarded by a goalkeeper, within a 30x30 yard small-sided pitch. This phase encourages quick decision-making and composure in front of goal, simulating realistic scoring opportunities under minimal pressure.

In Phase 2, the centre forward transitions to a passing task where they must deliver the ball into one of four colour-coded mini goals positioned in each corner of the grid. Players receive a predetermined passing instruction to play into the correct mini goal, reinforcing spatial awareness, accuracy, and controlled passing under match-like conditions.

  • • Encourage quick, decisive shooting during Phase 1 – The centre forward should maintain composure and choose the best goal to exploit the goalkeeper’s positioning.

    • Stress accuracy and technique in shooting – Controlled, well-placed shots improve scoring efficiency from different angles and distances.

    • Emphasise correct identification and execution of the pass to the designated mini goal – The player must quickly process instructions and adjust body positioning accordingly.

    • Reinforce smooth transition between shooting and passing phases – Maintaining focus and intensity through both phases maximises training effectiveness.

  • Add passive goalkeeper movement

Goalkeepers perform light lateral movements to increase challenge – This encourages the centre forward to refine shot placement and adapt quickly to changing keeper positions.

Focus: Improves shot accuracy and decision-making under variable goalkeeper pressure.

  • Introduce time constraints for passing phase

Limit the time allowed to pass into the correct mini goal after shooting – This develops faster cognitive processing, technical execution, and game-speed decision-making.

Focus: Enhances speed of play, technical precision, and mental sharpness under time pressure.
