Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 9 | Pitch size: 40x36

  • This drill begins with two defenders advancing up the grid to receive a pass each from the attackers. The defenders focus on controlling the ball under light pressure before playing a composed, accurate pass into their respective unopposed mini goals. This phase prioritizes ball control, timing, and precise delivery to maintain possession and build confidence in the build-up play.

Immediately after completing their passes, the drill transitions quickly as the two attackers launch a fast break, attempting to score on goal. The defenders must execute sharp inside recovery runs to reorganize defensively and defend the ensuing 2v2 attack. This demands quick reactions, strong communication, and coordinated defensive positioning to close down space and delay the attackers. The attackers, meanwhile, must exploit any defensive hesitation with clever movement, quick decision-making, and clinical finishing under pressure.

  • • Emphasise precise and controlled passing from defenders into mini goals – Players should focus on technique, weight, and timing of passes to maintain possession and accuracy.

    • Stress the importance of sharp and aggressive recovery runs by defenders – Defenders need to anticipate attackers’ movements and close down space quickly to reduce scoring chances.

    • Encourage attackers to exploit the transition phase with quick, incisive attacking play – Effective communication and movement off the ball will create opportunities in the 2v2 attack.

    • Reinforce defensive shape and teamwork during the 2v2 defensive phase – Defenders must communicate effectively, cover for each other, and delay attackers’ progression patiently.

  • Limit defenders to two touches when passing into mini goals

Restrict defenders to a maximum of two touches in the build-up phase to increase pressure and improve speed of play.

Focus: Develops quicker decision-making, enhanced technical skill, and encourages sharper, more effective passing under pressure.

  • Introduce a passive attacker during the defenders’ build-up phase

Add a passive attacker who applies light pressure on defenders during their passes to mini goals, increasing difficulty and promoting composure under pressure.

Focus: Improves defenders’ ball control and composure, sharpens passing accuracy, and better prepares players for realistic game pressure.
