Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 5 | Pitch size: 30x36

  • This energetic 2v1 drill features two consecutive attacking phases played in opposite directions. The session begins with two attackers working together to outplay a single defender and score in one of two mini goals positioned wide on the pitch. Immediately after completing this phase, players quickly turn around and transition into a second 2v1 attacking scenario going the opposite way, this time aiming to score in the main goal.

The drill develops quick attacking combinations, sharp decision-making, and rapid transitional awareness while challenging defenders to maintain positioning and defensive discipline under continuous pressure.

  • • Encourage quick combination play between attackers – Players must use sharp passing, movement, and communication to exploit numerical advantage effectively.

    • Stress the importance of defensive positioning in 1v2 situations – Defenders need to anticipate passes, maintain balance, and delay attackers to reduce scoring chances.

    • Emphasise rapid transition and awareness between phases – Players should quickly reset mentally and physically to maintain intensity and sharpness in both attacking directions.

    • Reinforce accuracy and composure when finishing into different-sized goals – Attackers must adjust technique and power according to goal size and distance.

  • Limit attackers to two touches maximum

Restrict attackers to a maximum of two touches during each 2v1 phase to speed up play and increase pressure on decision-making.

Focus: Develops faster technical execution, sharper vision, and improved teamwork under tighter possession constraints.

  • Add a passive defender to the second 2v1 phase

Introduce a passive defender providing light pressure in the second attacking transition to increase difficulty for attackers and encourage better ball control.

Focus: Improves composure under pressure, decision-making in tight spaces, and encourages attackers to shield and protect the ball more effectively.
