Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 10 | Pitch size: 30x40

  • This dynamic 1v1 drill focuses on rapid attacking transitions followed by immediate defensive recovery. Players start by attacking and shooting on goal, and immediately after their shot, they transition quickly to defend against the next attacker who sprints towards the opposite goal to score. The defending player’s primary objective is to apply maximum pressure on the attacker in transition, forcing hurried decisions and minimizing scoring chances.

This drill develops quick shifts between attacking and defending roles, enhancing players’ fitness, awareness, and tactical discipline. It simulates real-game scenarios where players must instantly switch mindsets and react quickly to changing situations on the field.

  • • Stress the importance of explosive reaction immediately after shooting – Players must quickly transition mindset and sprint back to close down the next attacker effectively.

    • Encourage aggressive but controlled pressure on the attacker – Defenders should close down space quickly without compromising balance or risking fouls.

    • Emphasise body positioning to force attackers away from goal – Defenders should angle their approach to shepherd attackers into less dangerous areas.

    • Reinforce communication and awareness of the game flow – Players need to anticipate transitions and position themselves optimally for quick defensive actions.

  • Reduce recovery time between phases

Shorten the rest or recovery period between attacking and defensive transitions – This increases physical demand and simulates high-tempo match conditions.

Focus: Improves players’ stamina, reaction speed, and ability to sustain high-intensity defensive pressure throughout the game.
