Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 8 | Pitch size: 1/3 Pitch
This high-energy 1v1 race combines speed, coordination, and technical dribbling under pressure. Two players begin side by side at the base of an SAQ ladder. On the coach’s signal, both players race through their ladders using quick feet and controlled movement. Once clear, they sprint laterally to collect a ball placed ahead of them on the side.
After collecting the ball, players immediately dribble through a line of three cones set diagonally in front of them, encouraging close control and body movement. Once through the cones, they attempt to pass cleanly into a mini goal at the end of their lane. The first player to score earns a point for their team.
This competitive format builds intensity, improves foot speed, and develops technical composure under physical fatigue.
• Emphasize sharp, accurate footwork through the ladder – Players must stay light on their toes, focusing on rhythm and control throughout the pattern.
• Encourage powerful, lateral sprinting after the ladder – Players should drive forward aggressively and stay low to accelerate efficiently into the ball pick-up.
• Promote close, controlled touches through the cones – Use both feet when dribbling and keep the ball tight to the body while changing direction.
• Stress calm, composed finishes into the mini goal – Even in a race, players should stay focused on accuracy and weight of pass when finishing.
Add a Final Sprint After the Pass
Once players pass into the mini goal, they must complete a short 5m sprint to a finish cone to fully complete the round.
Focus: Reinforce full intensity through to the end of the task, improving work rate and recovery speed after technical actions.
